Colorado's Eastern Gateway

Kit Carson County features a mixture of level prairie and valley lands along streams with Kansas on its eastern border. The immense Ogallala aquifer lies under several west-central states, but in Colorado's Central Plains, its presence is felt most profoundly in Kit Carson County. Here, it feeds and nourishes a flourishing irrigated agricultural economy as crops such as wheat, corn and sunflowers are watered with huge circular irrigation systems where pumps lift the life-giving water from hundreds of feet below the surface.

Economy

Kit Carson County is covered with acres and acres of farms and grazing lands. Deep-well irrigation, moisture conservation, and large, individual acreage have made Kit Carson County one of the top perennial winter-wheat producer in Colorado. It is third in producing corn for grain, corn for silage and dry beans. Other leading money crops include sunflowers, alfalfa, cattle and hogs.

Kit Carson County has attracted a number of light manufacturing operations, such as farm equipment and implement components, ready-mixed concrete, publishing and commercial printing.

Tourism plays a major role in the economy, as well. Over 200,000 visitors annually stop at The Burlington Welcome Center. Old Town and the world famous Kit Carson County Carousel are principal attractions.

Renewable energy is abundant on Colorado's Central Plains. In early 2011, 34 wind turbines were constructed northwest of Burlington generating a total of 51 megawatts of electricity. In early 2014, it was announced that a 150 megawatt wind farm will be built in Kit Carson County by NextEra Energy within the next two years. The Cedar Point wind project (a joint effort between Enbridge and Renewable Energy Systems Americas, Inc.) has 139 turbines capable of generating up to 252 megawatts of electrical power located in both Lincoln and Elbert Counties north and west of Limon. At the end of 2013, Limon I and II (Centennial Wind Farms) were online with one hundred twenty-five (125) 1.6mw turbines each, producing an additional 400 mw of renewable energy. NextEra was under construction at the end of 2013 for Limon III which will add more than 100 towers generating an additional 200 MW of power. When Limon III is completed, this will increase the total wind production in Lincoln County to 852 MW.

Life

The town of Burlington is home to the Kit Carson County Carousel, or PTC #6, a grand old carousel known world-wide for its original-paint menagerie. Visitors can enjoy a ride on one of 46 hand-carved wooden animals and listen to the music from its rare Wurlitzer band organ. If a ride on a carousel is not for you, then take a walk through Old Town to experience what life was like in the old west. Visit historic buildings and vintage wagons or watch a saloon show or gunfight.

Within 125 miles east of Denver, Kit Carson County's farming and ranching communities are rich in pride and progress. Burlington, Flagler and Stratton offer a unique prosperity to all its residents and preserve the down-to-earth quality of life amidst planned growth and development. Community involvement is huge with its numerous service organizations, church groups and clubs for all ages and interests. The schools and their sports teams also play an important role in the community. It's not unusual for the entire community to gather on a Friday night and cheer on the local football team.
